Carol Clift, Dip Itec., MCThA - email : reflex247@aol.com July 2007 ![]() Calm time Purely Relaxing This is for people who want a complete switch off from every day life. Clinical Reflexology I prefer clients to have a course of 5 sessions spread over one month. What's the difference ? A Clinical course deals with specific problems, whereas a Relaxing session would be less frequent - as and when you felt the need, or just a one-off. Maternity Reflexology I would prefer to see mums throughout their pregnancy in order to help keep mum and baby healthy and hopefully alleviate any problems. I will see mums at any time and prefer that they have their midwife/care giver's consent to receive Reflexology - however I find some overdue mums are invited by their midwife to find a Reflexologist to try and start labour. Reflexology is very helpful throughout pregnancy and can deal with many conditions that may arise. And what about starting labour or turning baby ? Reflexology cannot do and will not do anything the body does not want; that is the first thing to remember. Also, the baby starts the labour - yes ! You have all heard 'baby will come when it is ready' and that is so true but that does not mean to say we cannot change the circumstances. So what do I mean by that ? Well, if mum is very anxious, stressed, with all systems on overload worrying about this, that or the other - baby may well think 'hang on here, things aren't right' If I can calm mum, relax her, baby will think 'this feels right now' and that will send out the chemical to mum which starts off the labour. (Animals - horses in particular) will often choose to start labour when the conditions are right i.e. good weather, nice quiet evening etc) Turning baby - possible, but it is well to remember there may be a very good reason why the baby is in the 'wrong' position and best to leave well alone. However, if we remember that Reflexology cannot and will not do anything the body does not want - relaxing mum could create the right conditions for baby to just pop itself into the best position for birth.
